When Couples Say They Want A Winter Wonderland Either For Their Wedding Or For A Portrait Session, My First Suggestion Is Lake Louise! Emerald Lake Is Close Second. It's Pretty Much A Guaranteed Winter Wonderland From November To May, Whereas Banff Or Canmore Tends To Have Way Less Snow & Can Be A Little Unpredictable In How Wintery It Will Look.⁠ ⁠ Lake Louise Can Be Tricky With The Weather. The Snow We Had Yesterday Was Unrelenting. It Was Warmer Too, So It Was Wet Snow That Just Soaked Through Everything. But It Looked Freaking Magical. It's Hard To Shoot In, My Cameras Had A Layer Of Ice On Them At One Point, But I'd Rather Be Soaked, Frozen & Struggling To Focus So That We Can Shoot In Something That Looks This Amazing Then Go For Inside. You Don't Go To The Mountains For Photos Inside, Or At Least, You Don't If You End Up Shooting With Me! The Bride Was In Love With The Disney Movie Frozen, After Talking With Her And Planning Chris And The Team At Style House Created Something Amazing, We Started With The Couples Post Bridal Session, Shooting The Bride On Her Horse, And The Groom In Full Military Uniform, The Original Image Was Taken In Early Fall So The Leaves Had Started To Turn And It Was All About Getting The Right Perspective, Once Chris Had The Image, He Spent Over 40 Hours Creating The Environment Digitally, Making Sure It Had Both An Amazing Look And Feel But Really Set The Mood For The Couple

If You Scroll Through My Feed You'll Notice That I Mostly Share Images Shot With Natural Light. You Probably Also Assume That Is All I Can Do. I Prefer Shooting Natural Light Because Shooting With Lights Is A Lot Slower. It Doesn't Mean I Can't Do It. There's Some Places That It's Near Impossible To Shoot Without Using Lighting And This Corridor At The Fairmont Banff Springs Is One Of Those Places, Especially In The Evening When The Light Has Long Gone Outside. I Feel Like For A Lot Of Photographers That Photoshop Is A Dirty Word. "oh, She'll Just Photoshop That Out" Is A Phrase That Makes Me Cringe Every Time I Hear A Wedding Guest Say It. I Don't Like Photoshop. I Don't Use It Much. I Don't Want To Spend Time "fixing" A Photo After I Took It Especially If It's Something I Can Control. I Don't Think Most People Know What They Are Saying When They Say "photoshop It!". Do They Know How Much Extra Time That Adds To Each Photo To Fix Things That Could Have Been Avoided In The First Place? Instead, I'll Get Creative With What I Have In Front Of Me. Like For This Photo Of Alex And Daniel. There Were A Bunch Of People And Cars Marring The Background. Instead Of Shooting With The Plan To "photoshop It" Later I Decided To Change Up My Angle, Sit In A Very Awkward Squat And Use My Subjects To Block Out Undesirable Objects In The Background. I Like To Get It Right In Camera. For The Photographers Out There, How Do You Feel When You Hear People Saying For You To "photoshop" Things?

For The First Time In Many Years, I Am Actually Caught Up On Editing. I Can't Remember The Last Time I Didn't Have Anything To Edit! I'm Caught Up On Albums And Just Waiting For An Army Of Them To Eventually Get Delivered To My House. So Now I Can Finally Work On Blogging And I Have Over 60 Sessions That I Need To Blog Since The End Of June. Crazy Right? For 2019 I Was Really Hoping To Shoot More At Peyto Lake And Get A Break From Moraine Lake (and This Session Is On The Blog Now, By The Way). As Beautiful As Moraine Lake Is, It Can Be Super Frustrating To Try To And Shoot There. I Was Thinking I'd Convince More People To Go To Peyto Lake Next Year Instead... Until The Notice Came Out Last Week That Peyto Is Closed For Upgrading With A Crazy Long Timeline... So I Guess I'll Be Shooting Moraine Again This Year. There Was A Crazy Snowstorm At @emeraldlakelodge Today. I'm Used To Shooting In Snow But This Was Extra Special. My Cameras Were Soaked Like It Was Pouring Rain All Day, I Could Only See Through My Viewfinder About 80% Of The Time. I Fell Pretty Hard On Ice And Smashed A Camera (it's Still Doing But Will Send In For Service In A Few Weeks Just In Case). My Waterproof Snow Clothes Were Soaked. But These Two Took The Cold And The Snow And Toughed It Out And Made Magic Today! @kathapril_ Was Such A Trooper In The Cold, Wet Snow! Robin, You Did Ok Too! 😆🤣😝

I've Had A Few Weeks Off From Shooting While I Sent My Cameras Away To Be Repaired (all Is Good Now!). I'm Headed Back To Banff This Weekend And I'm Really Hoping This Crazy Cold Weather Will Be Gone. I Don't Mean It's Time For Spring Or Anything, But Single Negative Digits Would Be Fine By Me! ⁣ ⁣ Totally Unrelated To That.... This Week Marks The 15 Year Anniversary Of Derek & I Moving To Alberta! It Was 15 Years Ago This Week That We Said Goodbye To Montreal And Made A Blind Move To Edmonton. I've Never Lived Anywhere As Long As I Have Lived Here, Ever! I Also Never Expected To Make Photography A Business A Few Years After Moving Here. So Many Unexpected Twists And Turns Happen In Life! We Have No Plans To Move Away From Alberta In The Near Future, But The Plan To Move Closer To The Mountains Is Definitely Starting To Come Together!
