All About Micro Weddings

With the current climate, you’ve probably heard the term “micro wedding” more than ever. There’s been many questions surrounding the topic, so we thought we’d help explain! These types of celebrations have been around for years, yet are now becoming more popular. We are thrilled to be planning a few with our couples in 2021 and 2022 as well!
What exactly is a “Micro Wedding”?
A micro wedding is everything you’d expect from a traditional wedding, but smaller. Typically a more intimate affair, the guest list can be any amount from 10-40 guests, no more than 50. Generally micro weddings will include components of a larger traditional wedding day, yet on a smaller scale, typically with a more relaxed, chill vibe.
Sometimes there is a little confusion about a micro wedding vs. an elopement. As we mentioned, a micro wedding involves a smaller guest list, usually including close family members and a select few friends. While an elopement involves only the couple, a wedding officiant, and often a photographer, and is mainly focused on the ceremony.
Is a “Micro Wedding” right for you and your partner?
The current popularity of these types of celebrations is due to safety reasons, mandates, etc. However, there’s a few positives to consider too. The first one being freedom! Many large, traditional weddings can come with the pressure of formalities, family expectations, and a lot of comments like “well, you have to do this!” Yet micro weddings offer couples the freedom to think outside the box and use their creativity to come up with avant-garde ideas.
Often the schedule can be a little more lax and there is no worrying about trying to accommodate and entertain huge guest numbers. This provides more options to make the day totally unique and personalize your day event more.
Of course, the personalities of you and your partner can certainly depict the right type of wedding for you. If you two are naturally more introverted and the idea of “all eyes on you” causes more stress and anxiety, then a smaller micro wedding could certainly be a good choice. Many couples feel more at ease and relaxed on their special day knowing just a handful of their nearest and dearest are celebrating with them.
What’s the best way to plan a “Micro Wedding”?
Similar to planning a large traditional wedding, selecting a venue is the first step. It’s easier to find a venue and then tailor your guest list to fit, instead of inviting everyone and realizing you can’t find the right space. Take advantage of the small size and go somewhere you couldn’t go otherwise, like a lakeside ceremony and a unique restaurant reception!
Pro Tip: Many larger venues that typically wouldn’t accommodate smaller groups are finding unique ways to transform their spaces for micro weddings.

Possibly our favorite part of planning a micro wedding (or really any wedding, for that matter!) is finding ways to create a personal experience for your guests. Some ideas for meaningful touches are, writing handwritten notes to every guest to place at their seat, having custom glassware made for each guest, or maybe even considering hand-painting each invitation instead of having them printed. It’s much easier to add those unique, extraordinary touches for 22 guests than it is for 200! As you have taken the time to narrow your guest list down, we can almost guarantee you will have time to spend with each guest, making those little touches all the more meaningful.

Detach yourself from time-honored wedding traditions, if you are not comfortable wearing a white dress, wear a fun color.
